Today is a sad and great day for my people. On this day, 620 years ago, the combined forces of the Serb lords, under the leadership of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović met the Turkish army led by Murad I on the Field of Kosovo (Field of Balckbirds). Even though the Serbs held out through the battle, even killing the Turkish sultan, in the end they lost. The quickness and leadership of Murad's heir, Bayazit, earned him the nickname Yildirim (Lightning-bolt).
Despite the Pyrrhic Turkish victory, they had not subjugated Serbia; it lingered on for another 70 years thanks to the sacrifice of it's knights and soldiers, until it's capital Smederevo fell to Mehmet II. Their faith in God and their sacrifice live on now, after so many centuries. May God rest them in peace!
